About Făgăraș Mountains Natural Park

Făgăraș Mountains Natural Park encompasses one of the most impressive sections of the Southern Carpathians, covering a rugged mountain range with some of Romania’s highest peaks, including Moldoveanu Peak, the country’s tallest at 2,544 meters (8,350 feet). The park is characterized by steep ridges, deep glacial valleys, alpine lakes, and old-growth forests that provide habitat to wildlife such as brown bears, wolves, lynx, chamois, and diverse bird species. Established to protect this unique mountainous ecosystem, the park also preserves cultural heritage sites such as traditional shepherding settlements and alpine huts used by hikers. The park is a prime destination for nature enthusiasts who seek challenging hikes along the Făgăraș ridge, including the popular Transfăgărășan road that traverses the southern slopes and offers spectacular viewpoints. Winter activities such as snowshoeing and ski touring are increasingly popular, while summer attracts hikers, climbers, and wildlife watchers. Visitor facilities include marked trails, mountain shelters, and several access points from nearby towns. The combination of its remote terrain, diverse habitats, and panoramic mountain vistas makes Făgăraș Mountains Natural Park a standout destination for outdoor recreation in Romania.
